Got Foggy Windows
Got foggy windows?
You’re are not alone when it comes to having foggy windows and many of us don’t know what to do with them. Millions of foggy windows are replaced by glass companies across the country. Should you repair glass or replace them? That’s a good question and the answer will vary among glaziers. So here I will try to give you my personal view about replacing instead of repairing a double pane glass.
First of all keep in mind that the “advice” you get will be different depending who you’re talking and what’s their interest. It’s all about money and getting your business. Each glass company has its own way of fixing a glass that might not have your interest in mind so beware.
Two ways to deal with foggy windows:
- Repair Them (“Defogging”)
- Replace Them
Let’s talk about double pane windows in general:
- 5+ years lifespan
- Metal Spacer and desiccant to absorb water.
- Mutin Bars – Use for aesthetic purpose mainly
The manufacturer will tell you that it will last for at least 5+years for single seal or 10+years for dual seal. You should have an idea how old is your window if not make you know this information. If this is your first time replacing your insulated glass, the chances that your window has single seal or 5 years warranty is almost above 90%.
Now, would you defog a 4years window or replace it? Here is my personal opinion on this topic. Windows with tempered glass can’t use this method because defogging usually involves making a hole in the glass. Glass can’t not be cut or make holes after it is tempered. How do you know if it is tempered glass? It’s very easy, just search for logo or marking on the glass. If you see a logo in the corner then your glass is tempered for sure.
I would not recommend defogging your windows at all. If your windows is almost 5years or more which is the normal lifespan of windows, you are better off replacing them. Defogging will not fix the broken seal and you will spend more money at the end. You get condensation between the panes because you have a broken seal. In order to repair a broken seal you must remove the glass from the frame first. While defogging could be used on some windows, most likely your home is not one of them. Most glass company don’t approve this method and there is a practical reason for it.
The person that does defogging will try to sell this service and is usually much cheaper that replacing the glass. Should you choose this defogging? It is up to you, but I would not do it if I were you.
Your second option is to replace the glass. I highly recommend this option, but beware how the glass company will replace it. Some company will remove the double pane glass from the frame, cut open the two panes, and replace seal with new one. This work is done on site. Sometimes this is the best alternative when there is an emergency, but other than an emergency make sure the insulated unit is done by professional glass supplier.
The insulated glass suppliers have the tools, equipment, and knowledge to make a professional glass unit that will last for years. Glass company are good at installing window and not making them. I only install new double pane windows made from our glass suppliers and you should go with the glass shop that do the same too.
